Video Presentations

Video Presentations

For some of your courses you will be asked to prepare a video presentation. The instructions for the assignments themselves are provided in the course. Below is a list of either free, or low cost editing solutions for video assignments. This list was kindly compiled by our support team, feel free to send us any additions or comments or suggestions: climate-support@mlist.is.ed.ac.uk

Using a Mac computer?

iMovie - Installed on all Macs

This software is preinstalled on all Mac computers, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.  In my previous life as a student filmmaker, I ended up using iMovie to edit most of my submissions.  It’s extremely quick and easy to use, and can even upload straight to YouTube or Vimeo for class submissions.  The other major benefit of iMovie is that the iPhone and iPad integrates seamlessly with the newer versions of the desktop application, making it easy to edit footage on the go that will appear on your home computer in seconds.  The Apple website has a wealth of tutorial videos as well:

Using and iOS Device (iPhone & iPad)?

iMovie - £2.99

As above, this would be my first choice for video editing.  It’s powerful enough to create professional level videos on the go, which is a benefit for outside location shooting.  Again, it can upload straight to several popular video sharing services (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.), create video clips with titles, themes, and basic motion graphics.

BluxMovie - £1.49

Allows capture of video with custom filters, fades, and effects, and can create split screen video.  Works well in combination with iOS iMovie as a video capture tool, or as a basic editor.

Using a Windows Device?

Microsoft Movie Maker - Free

Windows equivalent to iMovie, allows you to import photos/videos, edit movies and audio and share online to SkyDrive, YouTube etc. Its user interface is easy to use and similar to other Microsoft packages (Office for example). Also available on the download page are short videos and tutorials which are useful for users, showing how to upload, edit and publish movies.

WeVideo - Online & Android

Free version is available for users, as well as paid services. It is an online video creation platform that has similar abilities to other video editing software. Drag and drop files, editing and publishing (straight to YouTube again) or to file. There are some payment options for higher quality, larger videos which are all available on the website. If using the android mobile version it is also possible to capture video through the device.

YouTube Video Editor - Free

This video editor can be accessed from within the YouTube website. You can combine videos and images that have been uploaded, trim to customised lengths, add audio and then publish straight to your YouTube account. There are plenty of tutorials available online to assist with editing.
